The range of the species includes Central Europe, Russia and North-Central Asia to Amur and Japan. In Bulgaria extremely rare; recorded from only three localities in the Danubian Plain at an altitude of approximately 200 m (Samuil) (
Markowitsch, 1909: 11); all the known specimens originate from the beginning of the last century. The species is included in Appendix II of the Bern Convention and is listed as vulnerable in Red Data Book of European butterflies (
van Swaay & Warren, 1999: 177).
