Blue underwing (Catocala fraxini)

Catocala fraxini and Catocala nivea are the largest representatives of the Catocala genus in the world. Not far ago Catocala fraxini was counted as representative of the family Noctuidae, but recently it was proved to belong to another family — Erebidae. This is the only representative of the genus in Europe with a blue hindwings. The blue underwing is the largest member of Erebidae family, as well as of the subfamily Noctuoidaea in Europe. Caterpillars feed on leaves of aspen, poplar, maple, ash, lime and other trees. It has Palaearectic range restricted from Europe to Japan and Korea.
