Lucanus cervus

Lucanus cervus belongs to the family of stag beetles is among the most famous European insect species. It is known from numerous localities, fairly even distributed throughout the territory of Bulgaria. It inhabits mostly the periphery (ecotones) of deciduous and mixed forests. The adults often could be seen in early summer. They are active at twilight and in the early night's hours as they fly and could be attracted to light sources. Males fight for dominance, and for female. Protected species.
